Questions to Ask Before Donating Money to an NGO

Updated: Mar 4, 2022

Society thrives and prospers when people who have the means put in their best foot forward to help the marginalized sections of the society in whatever little way it may be possible for them. There are people who either take out time to reach out to the poor and needy and do whatever is required to help them or donate some money to trustworthy charitable organizations so they can carry on with their day-to-day activities without any hassle.

While these acts of kindness do give a lot of satisfaction to people, they are also duly rewarded by the government in the form of income tax exemption under 80G.

However, before making any kind of donations, it is important to ensure that the NGO is genuine, and the funds are really being used for good work and one can be sure about these by asking the following questions:

Is the NGO genuine?

This is perhaps the most important question one needs to ask before donating to any organization as many people try to take advantage by presenting false credentials to extract money. And in order to ensure this, one can either visit the reliable NGO in India they wish to donate to or try to know their modus operandi or check their website and registration details as all NGOs need to be registered with the government. So, it is always advisable to donate to NGOs that you know well as this way, there will be the least chances of any fraudulent activity.

Who is your donation benefitting?

When you donate money to charity, you must try to find out exactly how they intend to use the funds and whether it will be used for the activity you desire to help with. There may be instances when you have donated to help with the corrective surgery of a child but since the NGO has many factions, the funds have been used for something else like paying the utility bills of the care home. So, you must always ask whether you can donate to a particular cause.

Will you get tax exemptions for the donation?

Since we are aware the government gives income tax exemption under 80G on donations made to charity, you must enquire whether your contribution too will qualify for the same.

With these questions answered and the authenticity of the NGO established, you can always go ahead and help the poor and needy to lead a better life. Also Narayan Seva Sansthan have free physiotherapy center all around India.
